Long before Stockton was built, Central Valley used to be occupied by Native Americans for thousands of years. A group of Northern Valley Yokuts people, i.e., Yatchicumne were already inhabiting the city when Europeans invaded the city. The village built by Yokuts was known as "Pasasimas". It was nestled on the mound located between Edison and Harrison Streets. It is the current location of the Stockton Channel situated in downtown Stockton. But, what major happened that remarkably transformed an itsy-bitsy city into a commercial center? The answer is the gold discovery on American River on January 24, 1848. And, a German immigrant, Captain Charles M. Weber was the striving mind behind this discovery, and it was only he who founded the city in 1849 in the wake of purchasing a land sprawling across more than 49,000 acres. Stockton, when it hadn't been called Stockton, was called by many unofficial names, such as, "Tuleburg," "Fat City," and "Mudville". To show his gratitude towards Commodore Robert F. Stockton, Captain Charles M. Weber named the city after his name, i.e., "Stockton". Stockton was officially incorporated on July 23, 1850, and the first election was conducted on July 31, 1850. The city attained its charter in 1851 from the State of California. Asians, Africans, Australians, Europeans, the Pacific Islanders, Mexicans, and Canadians are believed to be the early settlers in the city.

Weber Point Event Center

Cunningham Castle
Another beautiful string of Stockton's history is Cunningham Castle. Its not a castle but a castle-like jail which was built in 1893. It got its name due to its fortress-like design which was constructed during the reign of Sheriff Thomas Cunningham.
